E-scooters in Gothenburg: Voi, Lime and Ryde, and where to ride and park

E-scooters in Gothenburg need a City permit; in April 2025 Voi, Ryde and TierDott got one, and the City now lists Voi, Ryde and Lime. Our map shows Voi and Lime, not Ryde. Each app shows its price before you unlock. Ride on cycle lanes or the road, never on the pavement. Park in a stand or cycle rack, never on a cycle lane, nor on the pavement inside the old moat or on Drottningtorget.

E-scooters in Gothenburg: Voi, Lime and Ryde

Electric scooter rental in Gothenburg (Göteborg in Swedish) needs a permit, the City of Gothenburg says, and the permit decides where the companies may place their scooters, how fast they may go and where they may be parked. The companies pay the City a fee for each vehicle. The City’s page on shared e-scooters lists three companies (October 2026):

E-scooter companies in Gothenburg, their last published permits and what the map shows, October 2026
CompanyOn the City’s listPermit, 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026On the ScootRadar map
VoiYesE-scooters and e-bikesYes, with battery
LimeYesNot among the three named in April 2025Yes, with battery
RydeYesE-scootersNo: check the Ryde app
TierDott (Dott)NoE-scooters and e-bikesNo

The latest caps the City has published are for 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026: 4,000 e-scooters and 1,000 e-bikes in the centre zone, 2,500 e-scooters in the outer zone and 500 in a north-east zone of Angered, Bergsjön and Kortedala, which TierDott served. We found no published decision on the permits or caps from 1 April 2026. The City’s report for January to March 2026 says one of the three companies stopped early, in January, without naming it, and that from 1 April the scooters reach further beyond the centre. Dott’s own list of its towns names none in Sweden (29 October 2026).

Ryde isn’t on our map, so look for its scooters in its own app, and don’t read the map’s total as all the scooters in town. At 23:50 on Wednesday 28 October 2026 the map of Gothenburg showed about 2,530 Voi scooters as they stood at that moment and about 2,290 Lime scooters as last counted: a snapshot, not the fleet size. Scooters on a ride aren’t shown, nor prices, zones or parking. The map’s area isn’t cut to the city limits and takes in parts of neighbouring towns such as Mölndal and Partille.

How much does a Voi or Lime scooter cost in Gothenburg?

The app shows the price before you unlock. We found no Gothenburg price on an open official page, and Ryde’s website lists none. Bolt, which rents scooters in Malmö and Stockholm, isn’t on the City’s list. Check each app for its own age limit and fees.

E-scooter rules in Sweden: what applies in Gothenburg

An e-scooter, or elsparkcykel as the City’s own pages call it, counts as a bicycle if it goes no faster than 20 km/h and its motor is rated at no more than 250 W, says the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen, 14 August 2026), so cyclists’ rules apply. The law sets no minimum age; under-15s must wear a helmet, and the agency recommends one for everyone.

The police issue these fines on the spot (ordningsbot), at the amounts for cyclists set by the Prosecutor-General (1 November 2025). The City says enforcing the traffic rules is the police’s job. The same national rules apply in Stockholm and Malmö: see our Stockholm guide.

Where to park an e-scooter in Gothenburg

Since 1 September 2022 Swedish law has banned leaving an e-scooter on a footway or cycle lane except in a marked parking place or a cycle rack, but it lets each town allow exceptions. Gothenburg kept pavement parking allowed, and in June 2023 the City’s urban environment committee (stadsmiljönämnden) decided to bring the ban in step by step, starting on 1 October 2023 inside Vallgraven, the old moat round the city centre, and on Drottningtorget, the square in front of the Central Station. Elsewhere the exception still stood in August 2026; the City aims to lift it across the whole city at once, with a long-term plan due in 2027.

Today the City says shared scooters and bikes should as a rule be parked in marked stands or cycle parking, never on a cycle lane, and on the pavement only where they block no one, except inside Vallgraven and on Drottningtorget. In 2026 the City also made Korsvägen, Brunnsparken, Linnégatan and Järntorget zones where shared scooters may be parked only in marked spots, which the apps show; by August 2026 this was largely done, it reported.

The City moves dangerously parked scooters and bikes every day and charges for each one it moves; in 2024 it invoiced the companies SEK 300 a vehicle, the City’s executive office wrote in April 2025. The companies move badly parked scooters too, and if you park wrongly, the company you rented from may fine you. If a scooter blocks the way, report it to that company with its position, a photo and its QR code, the City asks.

In central Gothenburg end your ride in a marked stand or cycle rack, not on the pavement: inside the old moat and on Drottningtorget, pavement parking is banned. The app shows where ending a ride is allowed.

Avenyn, Liseberg, Slottsskogen and the Central Station

Around Avenyn, Haga, Nordstaden and the parks we found no e-scooter rule from the City beyond the digital zones the apps show and the parking rules above, which cover Brunnsparken, Järntorget, Linnégatan near Haga and Korsvägen by Liseberg.

We found no night ban, winter pause or season for hire scooters from the City (October 2026); each app shows when and where its scooters can be rented.

Can you take an e-scooter on the tram, bus or ferry?

Västtrafik, the region’s public transport, lets you take your own e-scooter on board as hand luggage if it is folded as small as it goes and there is room (October 2026):

  • Trams and buses: folded e-scooters only, as hand luggage; ordinary bikes and e-bikes aren’t allowed.
  • Boats, such as the archipelago ferries: folded e-scooters as hand luggage; bikes go on deck on most boats.
  • Västtåg trains: folded e-scooters as hand luggage; bikes go in the carriage with the cycle sign.
  • On every line: no charging on board, and electric vehicles must carry a CE mark.

A hire scooter stays on the street: end your ride in a stand or cycle rack near the stop before you board.

Styr & Ställ city bikes, e-bikes and Malmö

Styr & Ställ, the City’s bike-share since 2010, has 1,750 bikes in Gothenburg and Mölndal. A year pass costs SEK 300 and gives 60 free minutes on each loan; you rent through the nextbike app and return the bike to a station. Shared e-bikes from private companies came in April 2025, when Voi and TierDott were each allowed 500 in the centre; riders made about 314,000 trips on them that year, the City counted. The map shows standing e-scooters only, not bikes.

Further south, Malmö caps its scooters and requires stands in the centre: see our Malmö guide and the map of Malmö. To see what is standing near you now, open the Gothenburg map.

Did you know?

  • More rides every year. About 3 million e-scooter trips were made in Gothenburg in 2023, 4.5 million in 2024 and 6.9 million in 2025, the City counted.
  • A fifth replace a car. About 20% of e-scooter trips in Gothenburg replace a car trip, earlier surveys of riders suggested, the City’s executive office wrote in April 2025.
  • Moved off the street. The City made 1,158 decisions to move cycles and e-scooters in 2025, and 489 from January to June 2026.

Questions

Which e-scooter companies operate in Gothenburg?
The City lists Voi, Ryde and Lime (October 2026), though we found no published permit decision for the period from 1 April 2026. The ScootRadar map shows Voi and Lime; Ryde’s scooters are only in its app. TierDott, which held a permit until 31 March 2026, is no longer on the City’s list, and Dott names no Swedish town among its locations.
Can I park an e-scooter on the pavement in Gothenburg?
Only where it blocks no one, and never inside the old moat (Vallgraven) or on Drottningtorget, where pavement parking has been banned since 1 October 2023. The City wants shared scooters in marked stands or cycle parking as a rule, never on a cycle lane, and aims to extend the ban to the whole city.
Do I need a helmet to ride an e-scooter in Gothenburg?
Only if you are under 15: Swedish law requires a helmet for younger riders, and the Swedish Transport Agency recommends one for everyone.
Can I take an e-scooter on a Gothenburg tram?
Only your own, folded as small as it goes and carried as hand luggage if there is room, and it may not be charged on board. A hire scooter stays on the street, so end your ride before you board.
Can I ride an e-scooter at Liseberg?
No. Liseberg says visitors may not ride e-scooters around the park. End your ride outside, for example by the cycle racks near the South Entrance, if the app allows it there.
Are e-scooters banned at night in Gothenburg?
No. We found no night ban or winter pause for hire scooters from the City (October 2026).
