E-scooters in Milton Keynes: Lime, Dott and the council’s trial

Two companies, Lime and Dott, hire out e-scooters in Milton Keynes, and e-bikes in the same apps. Milton Keynes City Council, the highway authority, runs the trial “working with Lime and Dott”, its Get Around MK site says.

Since when? Since August 2020, when the council announced a 12-month trial with Lime, Spin and Ginger. Tier took over from Spin in August 2022, MKFM reported, and merged with Dott in March 2024; Dott said it would move every Tier city to the Dott app by early 2025. By October 2024 the council named only Lime and Dott; we couldn’t find when Ginger left.

Until when? Milton Keynes is on the government’s list of trial areas (updated 7 July 2026), and the national trials run until May 2028. We couldn’t check the council’s own terms after May 2026.

At 07:47 on Sunday 25 October 2026 the map of Milton Keynes showed about 1,200 e-scooters, about 1,110 Lime and 90 Dott: a snapshot, not the fleet size. It shows where they stand and Lime’s battery, not prices, zones, parking, hours or e-bikes. The total takes in the older towns too: later that morning scooters stood from Stony Stratford and Wolverton to Newport Pagnell, Kents Hill and Bletchley.

New to hire scooters? See how to rent an e-scooter.

Hire scooters are legal because Milton Keynes is a trial area. You need a full or provisional driving licence with category Q, included in every UK car, moped and motorcycle licence. The law allows riders from 16, but “the operators … restrict usage to over 18”, the council says. Visitors can use a full EU or EEA licence, or another country’s full car, moped or motorcycle licence within 12 months of entering the UK, never a foreign provisional licence or learner permit. A private e-scooter is illegal on Milton Keynes’ roads, Redways and pavements and in its parks, the council says. Riding one counts as riding an uninsured motor vehicle: a £300 fixed penalty and 6 points, and police can seize it, since 29 June 2026 without a warning first if it’s ridden anti-socially. On 30 June 2026 Thames Valley Police seized 12 e-scooters and 2 e-bikes in Milton Keynes for no insurance, after 146 e-scooter and e-bike seizures in the previous 12 months, MKFM reported.

Can you ride e-scooters on the Redways? Where to ride in MK

“Generally, you can ride the rental scooters anywhere you can ride a cycle,” the council says: in Milton Keynes “primarily … the Redway network, cycle tracks and local roads”. Never ride on the pavement, and keep off the grid roads. In Central Milton Keynes you may also use the roads, car parks and underpasses.

The Redways are over 200 miles of shared paths for “walking, wheeling, cycling and scooting”. The council’s Redway Code asks you to slow down at bends and junctions, pass people with plenty of room and not use your phone.

The apps cut a scooter’s power or speed where it isn’t allowed, the council explains. Dott’s own data listed 68 zones on 25 October 2026, without names:

  • No riding: 30 zones, most of them small, which you can’t even ride through: 9 in Central Milton Keynes and 8 in Bletchley.
  • Slow zones: 33, mostly 16 km/h (about 10 mph), covering about two-thirds of Central Milton Keynes; 12 km/h (about 7.5 mph) in parts of Bletchley and Wolverton; 14 km/h (about 9 mph) in part of Newport Pagnell.
  • Ride through, but don’t start or end a ride: 4 small zones, 2 of them in Central Milton Keynes.
  • Everywhere else in Dott’s area: 20 km/h (about 12 mph) at most, and you end your ride at a Dott parking point.

Lime sets its own zones: check its app.

Where to park a Lime or Dott in Milton Keynes

In Central Milton Keynes, between the V8, V6, H6 and H5 grid roads, rides have ended only at cycle parking, Sheffield stands and street pods, since 28 October 2024, the council announced. The apps show where.

Everywhere else, mandatory parking zones replaced free-floating parking in January 2026, drawn up by the council with Lime, Dott and the parish councils, Bletchley and Fenny Stratford Town Council explained on 29 January 2026. Leave the scooter upright and take a photo to end the ride: “users who park obstructively will be warned and may be fined”. Dott’s data listed 1,840 parking points on 25 October 2026.

The new system “resulted in fines for e-bikes and e-scooters parked outside designated areas”, road.cc reported in May 2026. Spot a scooter blocking a Redway? Give its registration plate, or the time and place, to Lime (0800 808 5223) or Dott (0800 048 8993): the council requires them to respond within 2 to 4 hours.

Can you take an e-scooter on the train at Milton Keynes Central?

  • Avanti West Coast, whose intercity trains stop at Milton Keynes Central: “electric scooters are not permitted on our trains or anywhere on our stations”. The ban began on 27 December 2022, on its trains and at the 16 stations it manages, over the risks of lithium-ion batteries.
  • London Northwestern Railway manages Milton Keynes Central, National Rail says; we couldn’t check its own conditions.
  • Buses: we couldn’t check Arriva’s conditions; the council’s MK Connect page mentions mobility scooters, not e-scooters.

Commuting to London? Lime and Voi hire out e-scooters in parts of the capital: see our London guide. Voi runs the schemes in Northampton and Aylesbury, where the map showed about 1,250 and 230 e-scooters at 07:47 on 25 October 2026.

  • 1.6 million journeys by November 2022, replacing an estimated 390,000 car journeys and saving 128 tonnes of carbon, the council said.
  • Horses and robots. Delivery robots share the Redways, and “horse-riding is permitted on redways, which are part of the bridleway network”, the council says.
  • A Scooter Summit. In September 2026 a local MP surveyed residents on the trial before a “Scooter Summit” with councils, police and operators, MKFM reported.

Questions

Which e-scooter companies are in Milton Keynes?
Lime and Dott, the council says. Spin, Ginger and Tier have gone; Tier merged into Dott in 2024. Our Milton Keynes map shows Lime’s and Dott’s e-scooters, not their e-bikes.
Can I ride a Lime or Dott to Newport Pagnell, Olney or Woburn Sands?
Newport Pagnell, yes: part of it lies inside Dott’s area, and the map showed scooters there on 25 October 2026. Dott’s area stops short of Olney, Woburn Sands and Cranfield. Lime’s app shows its own boundary.
Is there a student or NHS discount?
Yes. Lime Access takes 50% off with a student card, a Blue Light Card or a key-worker ID, and Dott’s UK Access Scheme gives up to 80% off to NHS employees, students and others, the council’s Get Around MK site says.
Can I ride my own e-scooter on the Redways?
No. The council says a private e-scooter can’t be used on roads, Redways or pavements or in parks, and The Parks Trust bans them from its parks. Thames Valley Police says it will seize illegal e-scooters and destroy them, MKFM reported in July 2026.
Where can I leave a hire scooter in Central Milton Keynes?
Only at cycle parking. Since 28 October 2024 Lime and Dott rides there can end only at the existing Sheffield stands and street pods, the council says. The app shows the racks.
What time do e-scooters stop in Milton Keynes?
No council page we found sets hours, and we found no night ban. Check the Lime or Dott app before a late ride home.
