E-scooters in Gävle: Voi’s season, and where to ride and park
E-scooters in Gävle are rented from Voi alone: it won the municipality’s procurement and is the only company allowed to put out hire scooters, and they are normally out from May to October, Gävle kommun says (September 2026). Voi scooters were still on our map on 29 October 2026, and we found no end date for this season: check the Voi app. The map shows where they stand, but no prices or zones. Ride on the cycle lane or the road, never on the pavement, and end your ride at an approved parking place, such as a cycle rack.
Electric scooter rental in Gävle: Voi alone
Gävle chose its e-scooter company by public procurement. Voi won it, and Gävle kommun (the Municipality of Gävle) says Voi is the only provider allowed to put out hire e-scooters and e-bikes in the town (page updated 11 September 2026):
| Company | Allowed in Gävle, as the municipality says | On the ScootRadar map |
|---|---|---|
| Voi | Yes, the only one, under the agreement it won | Yes, with battery |
| Bolt, Lime, Qick, Ryde and others | No | No |
At 15:55 on Thursday 29 October 2026 the map of Gävle showed about 940 Voi scooters as they stood at that moment: a snapshot, not the fleet size. Scooters on a ride aren’t shown, nor prices, zones, parking places or Voi’s e-bikes.
That total takes in the whole town, Valbo and Furuvik, in an area that also reaches into Skutskär, in neighbouring Älvkarleby municipality, and to the eastern edge of Sandviken.
How much does a Voi scooter cost in Gävle?
The app shows the price before you unlock. We found no Gävle price on an open official page, and the municipality’s page names none.
Check the Voi app for its age limit and fees too. New to hire scooters? See how to rent an e-scooter.
Gävle kommun’s agreement with Voi: the season, slow zones and removals
A Gävle kommun traffic planner told a Swedish cycling conference (Cykelkonferensen) in 2023 that the municipality had tendered the service as a concession in September and October 2022, signed the contract in December 2022 and started it in spring 2023, for two years with two optional one-year extensions (“2+1+1”). The municipality’s own page (updated 11 September 2026) says:
- The season: e-scooters and e-bikes are normally out in the snow-free season, May to October.
- Slow zones: in the low-speed zones the scooter limits its own speed. They include Drottninggatan, parts of Nygatan and Centralplan.
- Ending a ride: park in a designated place in central Gävle, such as a cycle rack; the app shows every approved place. Outside central Gävle you can’t end a ride just anywhere.
- Removals: Voi’s operations team watches the fleet every day and moves scooters and e-bikes that are badly parked, outside the operating area or bunched together, most of them in the mornings and evenings.
On 5 May 2026 the municipality said the scooters were back for the season. They were still on our map on 29 October 2026; we found no end date for this season, so check the Voi app. We also found no published cap and no night ban, night speed limit or other night rule for riders.
On those 2+1+1 terms, 2026 is the last season the agreement can cover. We found no decision by the municipality on what follows, so check its page before next spring.
E-scooter rules in Sweden: what applies in Gävle
An e-scooter, or elsparkcykel as Gävle kommun’s own pages call it, counts as a bicycle if it goes no faster than 20 km/h and its motor is rated at no more than 250 W, says the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen, 14 August 2026), so cyclists’ rules apply. The law sets no minimum age; under-15s must wear a helmet, and the agency recommends one for everyone.
| Rule | What it means | Set by | If you break it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where to ride | The cycle lane if there is one, otherwise the road; from 15 you may use the road anyway, with care, where the limit is 50 km/h or less | The law | SEK 500 |
| Pavements | Never ride on a pavement or footway; you may wheel the scooter there | The law | SEK 500 |
| Pedestrian streets | Walking pace; give way to people on foot | The law | SEK 1,000 |
| Red lights | Stop, as on a bicycle | The law | SEK 1,500 |
| One rider | No passengers | The law | SEK 500 for the rider and SEK 500 for the passenger |
| Helmet | Compulsory under 15, recommended for all | The law | No fine for the rider |
| Alcohol | No fixed limit, but you may not ride if drink or drugs stop you riding safely | The law | – |
| Slow zones | The scooter limits its own speed there | The municipality, with Voi | – |
| Parking | In an approved place, such as a cycle rack; never on a pavement, footway or cycle lane, nor where it blocks the way | The law since 1 September 2022; the municipality | A parking fine, the municipality warns |
The police issue these fines on the spot (ordningsbot), at the amounts for cyclists set by the Prosecutor-General (1 November 2025). The same national rules apply in Stockholm and Uppsala: see our Stockholm guide and Uppsala guide.
Where to park an e-scooter in Gävle
Since 1 September 2022 Swedish law has banned leaving an e-scooter on a footway or cycle lane except in a marked parking place or a cycle rack. Gävle kommun says you may not park on a pavement, footway or cycle path, nor leave a scooter where it blocks one, and that riders who park wrongly risk a parking fine.
In autumn 2025 the municipality tried out new racks for Voi’s scooters and e-bikes in central Gävle; it says they made free scooters easier to find and the streets tidier and safer, so they came back at the start of the 2026 season, mainly near Stortorget, Gävle central station, the town hall (Rådhuset) and Kungsbäck (5 May 2026). The municipality also plans to mark parking places on the ground.
To report a badly parked scooter, tell Voi through the QR code on it or Voi’s website, the municipality says. It holds regular follow-up meetings with Voi on zones, parking limits, reports and fines.
In Gävle a hire scooter belongs in an approved parking place, such as a cycle rack, never on the pavement or a foot-and-cycle path. The app shows where ending a ride is allowed.
Where to ride: the station, the university, Boulognerskogen and Furuvik
Ride on the cycle lane, or the road, and expect your scooter to slow down on Drottninggatan, parts of Nygatan and Centralplan. Outside central Gävle you can’t end a ride just anywhere, so check the app before you ride out to Furuvik. Each landowner below sets its own rules:
| Place | Who says so | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Gävle Central | Jernhusen, the station’s owner | No e-scooter rule on its station page (read 29 October 2026); some of the municipality’s racks are near the station |
| University of Gävle (Högskolan i Gävle), Kungsbäcksvägen 47 | The university | No e-scooters, bicycles or other wheeled transport indoors: you may not ride or use them in its buildings, and for fire safety no bike batteries may be taken in (11 June 2026); we found no outdoor rule. Some of the municipality’s racks are near Kungsbäck |
| Boulognerskogen | Gävle kommun | Cycling in the park is fine, on pedestrians’ terms, along the signposted foot-and-cycle paths (October 2025); no e-scooter rule of its own |
| Furuviksparken | Furuvik | About 10 km south of Gävle, reached by an asphalted, lit cycle path all the way from town, by bus 501 or by train, whose platform is just outside the main entrance; no e-scooter rule on its pages or in its FAQ |
Can you take an e-scooter on an X-trafik bus or the train?
X-trafik, the public transport of Gävleborg county, lets you bring a folding e-scooter free of charge as hand luggage on its town buses, regional buses and X-tåg trains, if there is room. It must stay fully folded for the whole trip and be no larger than 120 cm and no heavier than 15 kg. An e-scooter that doesn’t fold may not come aboard any X-trafik vehicle, and you may not charge a battery on board (read 29 October 2026). End a hire-scooter ride at a rack near the stop before you board.
On SJ’s trains, SJ says, fold the e-scooter and put it in the luggage rack or under the seat in front of you, not overhead; you may not charge it on board.
