E-scooters in Odense: Voi and Lime, where to leave a scooter, and Denmark’s rules
Voi and Lime rent e-scooters in Odense. Danish rules make a helmet compulsory for every rider, set the minimum age at 15, limit the motor to 20 km/h and send you onto the cycle track, never the pavement. Odense lets you leave a rental scooter almost anywhere it is out of the way, with one rule of its own: never in a park or on a green area.
Which e-scooter apps work in Odense?
Voi and Lime. They are the two companies that make e-scooters available in Odense, says the e-scooter page of the Municipality of Odense (Odense Kommune), updated 7 January 2026. You download the company’s app, sign up and pay by card: a start fee and a price per minute. Check the price in the app before you unlock.
At 10:57 am on Monday 2 November 2026, Danish time, the Odense map showed about 680 Voi scooters free to rent at that moment and about 690 Lime scooters as last counted. The map shows the nearest one and the walk to it, and a button opens the app.
Each company has approved places where it sets its scooters out every morning; during the day they spread across the whole city. New to shared scooters? See how to rent an e-scooter.
Where can you leave a rental e-scooter in Odense?
Almost anywhere, as long as it is out of the way. Unlike Copenhagen, where rental scooters may stand only in about 400 parking areas, Odense lets you leave one where you like, its page says:
- On the road, pavement or footpath. After a ride you may leave the scooter anywhere on a public road, pavement or footpath, the city says, citing the Road Traffic Act (færdselsloven § 28), as long as it bothers no one and no sign says otherwise.
- Never in a park or on a green area. This is Odense’s own rule.
- Not in the way. The city asks anyone who finds a scooter filling the pavement, so that a pram can’t get past for example, to move it, and to report bigger or repeated problems to the company or through the city’s tip service at odense.dk/tip.
- The morning places are not parking areas. The places approved for each company apply only when it sets its scooters out in the morning; you don’t have to end a ride at one.
Rådet for Sikker Trafik, the Danish Road Safety Council, asks riders to park rental scooters lawfully and considerately, so they bother no one and nobody trips over them.
Plan the end of your ride. If you are heading for a park, end your ride on the street outside it and walk in.
Can you ride an e-scooter in Odense? Age and helmet
Yes, from the age of 15. The rules are set by an executive order, BEK nr 40 of 14 January 2019 (BEK 40), and both Odense Kommune and Rådet for Sikker Trafik list them:
- Age: 15 or over (BEK 40, § 10). Under 15, a child may ride only accompanied and supervised by an adult of at least 18, or only within signed play and home zones (lege- og opholdsområder). Rådet for Sikker Trafik advises against letting under-15s ride even there.
- Helmet: a fastened, approved cycle helmet for every rider, adults included, since 1 January 2022 (§ 10 a). Riding without one costs DKK 1,500.
- One rider only: no passengers (§ 6).
- Lights: on whenever you ride, day and night (§ 8).
- Phone: no handheld phone while you ride, as on a bicycle, the police say.
An e-scooter is allowed in traffic only if its motor can drive it no faster than 20 km/h (BEK 40, § 1) and it can’t be set to go faster, Rådet for Sikker Trafik says. It may weigh no more than 25 kg and measure no more than 2 m long and 0.70 m wide (§ 4 and § 5).
Where can you ride an e-scooter in Odense?
Ride as a cyclist does: the Road Traffic Act’s rules for cyclists apply to e-scooters (BEK 40, § 3).
- Cycle track first. Use it where there is one, and obey the cyclists’ lights and signs.
- Never on the pavement. Pavements, footpaths and pedestrian crossings are off limits to riders.
- Signal. Give a hand signal when you turn or stop, as cyclists do.
- Take care when you overtake. Rådet for Sikker Trafik warns that from a distance you can look like a pedestrian, so others find your speed hard to judge, and that you can be hard to hear coming from behind.
Crossing the tram tracks in Odense
Odense’s tram, the Letbane, runs on a line of just over 14 km from Tarup in the north to Hjallese in the south. The city’s page on traffic safety near it (updated 23 March 2026) gives this advice:
- Cross at right angles. The city tells cyclists, whose rules you follow, to cross the tracks square on, never at a slant, so a tyre can’t get stuck in the rails. Markings on the road or signs at the crossings make this clear.
- Look both ways. The tram comes from both directions, and you often can’t hear it. Where there are no traffic lights, you must give way: stop and look carefully before you cross.
- Never wait on the tracks. In a busy junction, wait behind the stop line until you can get all the way across.
- Brake on amber. The tram has priority at the 56 junctions with traffic lights that it passes through, and other traffic gets a red light as it comes, even traffic going straight ahead in the same direction as the tram.
Denmark’s e-scooter rules and fines in one table
These national rules apply in Odense as everywhere in Denmark; the last row is the city’s own.
| Rule | What applies | Fine |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum age | 15; under 15 only with an adult of 18 or over, or in signed play and home zones | – |
| Helmet | Compulsory for every rider since 1 January 2022 | DKK 1,500 |
| Speed | The motor must not be able to drive it faster than 20 km/h | – |
| Where to ride | Cycle track where there is one; follow the cycling rules | DKK 1,000 |
| Pavements, footpaths and crossings | No riding | DKK 1,000 |
| Passengers | One rider only | DKK 1,000 |
| Lights | Front and rear lights on day and night | DKK 1,000 |
| Alcohol | Limit 0.5 per mille; zero for illegal drugs | DKK 2,000, then 4,000 |
| Insurance | On a rental scooter, the company must hold the compulsory liability insurance | – |
| Leaving a rental scooter in Odense | Out of the way, and never in a park or on a green area | – |
DKK 1,000 is Rådet for Sikker Trafik’s fine for breaking the traffic rules on an e-scooter.
Drinking, insurance and night rides
- Alcohol. The limit is 0.5 per mille (færdselsloven § 53, which BEK 40 § 11 applies to e-scooters), with a zero limit for illegal drugs. Stopped over the limit, you are arrested and a blood sample is taken. The fine is DKK 2,000 the first time and DKK 4,000 the second.
- Insurance. On a rental scooter the duty to insure falls on the company (BEK 40, § 12), and while you ride you must be able to show the police that the liability insurance is in force, which you may do electronically, on your phone for example (§ 13). Rådet for Sikker Trafik adds that this applies to tourists too and that the app or the company’s website should show it. Ride against the rules and the insurance may not pay: hit someone on the pavement, for example, and you could face a very large claim yourself.
- At night. Your lights must be on anyway, day and night: white or yellow at the front, red at the back, clearly visible from at least 300 metres (BEK 40, § 8), with reflectors at the front, the back and on both sides (§ 9).
Scooters on the tram, buses and trains
On a rental scooter, end your ride near the stop and walk on. For a scooter of your own:
- Tram (Odense Letbane): in Odense it is free to take your bike or scooter on the tram, Odense Letbane says, but only when there is good room. Be ready for there to be none on weekdays from 7:00 to 9:00 from the centre towards SDU, the University of Southern Denmark, and from 13:00 to 17:00 from SDU towards the centre. Each tram has two flex areas; strap your bike in with the belts by the folding seats, or hold on to it all the way. Buy your ticket before you board: without a valid one, the control fee is DKK 1,000 for an adult.
- Buses: all public buses in Odense are FynBus’s, the city says, and a Rejsekort works on all of them; a city and harbour bus serves the centre and the harbour. Check FynBus’s rules before you bring your own scooter aboard.
- DSB InterCity trains: a scooter that folds to within 30 × 60 × 100 cm travels free, folded for the whole trip, Din Offentlige Transport says. On InterCity, InterCity Lyn and Lyn+ trains, one that doesn’t fold, or is larger than 30 × 60 × 115 cm folded, needs a bike space ticket (Cykelpladsbillet), which you can buy in DSB’s app. Staff decide whether there is room.
Coming back out, open the Odense map to find the nearest scooter to the stop.
Did you know?
- Still a trial scheme. The order that lets e-scooters onto Danish roads is titled an order on a trial scheme (forsøgsordning) for motorised scooters, in force since 17 January 2019, and Odense’s page still calls the rules the trial scheme.
- The City of Cyclists. Odense calls itself Cyklisternes By and has over 560 km of cycle tracks, its cycling page says (updated 24 September 2025).
- A green wave for the tram. Every junction with lights on the line is told when a tram is on its way, and the tram gets green, so it stops at red as little as possible.
