E-scooters in Katowice and Chorzów: Bolt, Poland’s rules, parking, and scooters on trams, buses and trains
You can rent an e-scooter (hulajnoga elektryczna) in Katowice and neighbouring Chorzów with Bolt; check the fare and the minimum age in the app. Polish law limits you to 20 km/h and sends you to the cycle path first, then to a road limited to 30 km/h, and the pavement only as an exception. Transport GZM’s trams and buses take your own folded e-scooter, held in your hand, but not a shared one, and Koleje Śląskie’s regional trains carry a folded, packed scooter free.
Which e-scooter apps work in Katowice and Chorzów?
Katowice and Chorzów share one map on ScootRadar, and Bolt’s scooters are on it.
At 15:57 on Monday 2 November 2026, Polish time, the Katowice and Chorzów map showed about 700 Bolt scooters free to rent at that moment.
Neighbouring Siemianowice Śląskie, Świętochłowice and Ruda Śląska have no map of their own on ScootRadar: look for scooters there on the Katowice and Chorzów one. Zabrze, Gliwice and Tychy have maps of their own: see the Zabrze, Gliwice and Tychy maps.
Check the fare, and the company’s minimum age for renting, in the app before you unlock. New to shared scooters? See how to rent an e-scooter.
Our guides to Kraków, Łódź, Warsaw, Wrocław, Bydgoszcz and Toruń cover the same national rules.
Where can you ride? Poland’s e-scooter rules
Poland’s Road Traffic Act (Prawo o ruchu drogowym) sets the riding rules in Katowice and Chorzów, as everywhere in the country. An electric scooter (hulajnoga elektryczna) may go no faster than 20 km/h.
- Cycle path or cycle lane first, where there is one for your direction.
- Otherwise the road, but only where its speed limit is 30 km/h or less.
- The pavement only as an exception: beside a road with a limit above 30 km/h and no cycle path or lane. Ride at walking pace there, give way to pedestrians and don’t get in their way.
| Rule | What applies | Fine |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum age | 13 since 3 March 2026 (10 before); under 13 only in a home zone, with an adult | – |
| Aged 13 to 17 | A bicycle card (karta rowerowa) or an AM, A1, B1, B or T licence | – |
| Helmet | Required under 16 since 3 June 2026 | Up to PLN 100, for the parent or carer |
| Cycle path | Use it where there is one | PLN 100 |
| Pavement | Only beside a road over 30 km/h with no cycle path or lane | PLN 200 |
| On the pavement | Walking pace, give way, don’t obstruct | PLN 300 each |
| Riding | One rider; no passenger, animal, load or towing; not side by side on the road; a hand on the handlebar | PLN 50 for side by side or no hands |
| Phone | Don’t hold it while riding | PLN 500 |
| Alcohol, 0.2‰ to 0.5‰ | “After drinking” (stan po użyciu alkoholu) | PLN 1,000 ticket; in court up to PLN 5,000 or arrest, and possibly a riding ban |
| Alcohol, over 0.5‰ | “Drunk” (stan nietrzeźwości) | PLN 2,500 ticket; in court up to PLN 5,000 or arrest, and possibly a riding ban |
| Parking on the pavement | In a marked place, else at the outer edge, parallel to it, leaving 1.5 m for pedestrians | Removal at the owner’s cost if it blocks the way |
All are national rules, the same in Katowice, Chorzów and every other Polish town. The tickets come from the government’s fines tariff in force since 1 January 2022, and the helmet fine from the Code of Petty Offences.
The helmet rule covers rented scooters too. The National Road Safety Council (KRBRD) said on 3 June 2026 that it applies whether a rider under 16 uses their own scooter or a rented one, and that a helmet, though not compulsory from 16, is advised.
Adults need neither a driving licence nor a bicycle card to ride.
Where to park in Katowice and Chorzów
National law lets you leave an e-scooter on the pavement only in a place marked for it or, failing that, at the pavement’s outer edge, parallel to it, leaving 1.5 m for people on foot. Before you end a ride, check where the app lets you finish it.
When shared e-scooters reached Zabrze in April 2021, the Metropolis (Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia, GZM) passed on Zabrze city hall’s parking advice:
- Look for a bike stand first, and leave room at it for cyclists who want to lock their bikes.
- With no stand nearby, park where it bothers people on foot least, and where it can be seen, not round the corner of a building; along a building’s wall is one option.
- Keep clear of pedestrian crossings, far enough that the scooter doesn’t put anyone at risk.
- Leave a 1.5 m path for pedestrians and put the scooter on its stand so that it stays upright.
If a scooter is left where parking is banned and it blocks traffic or puts anyone at risk, the police or the municipal police (Straż Miejska) can have it removed at its owner’s cost. For a rental, the owner is the company: check its terms in the app to see what it may charge you.
Trams and buses: Transport GZM’s rules
Katowice’s and Chorzów’s trams and buses run as Transport GZM, organised for the Metropolis by its transport authority, ZTM (Zarząd Transportu Metropolitalnego). Its carriage rules (regulamin przewozu), in force since 16 April 2024, name e-scooters directly:
- Your own e-scooter, folded and held in your hand, is allowed, carried so that it doesn’t bother other passengers. Personal transport devices such as electric skateboards and self-balancing devices are allowed too, and kick scooters if folded and held in the hand.
- Keep it still for the whole ride, secured with the vehicle’s handles or straps against shifting, tipping or falling over, so that it can’t dirty or damage the vehicle, hurt other passengers, damage their belongings or get in their way.
- Not in the way. Luggage, an e-scooter included, may travel only where it doesn’t block the aisle or the ticket validators, put other passengers at risk, hide the driver’s view, threaten road safety or hold up the timetable. No luggage on the seats.
- No shared scooters. The rules bar bikes, scooters and e-scooters from sharing schemes (city bikes and scooters), and any used commercially. A Bolt scooter can’t come on board: end your ride and park it before you get on.
The driver or a ticket inspector can ask you to stow your luggage properly, and to get off with it if you don’t, or if it is something the rules bar. Under the law you are also liable for any damage your scooter causes to ZTM, the operator or anyone else, passengers included.
Bikes have their own rules: they go in the bike spaces of vehicles that have them (marked by a pictogram inside and out), and anywhere else only with the driver’s consent.
Koleje Śląskie trains
Koleje Śląskie, the Silesian regional railway based in Katowice, sets its own rules for scooters (hulajnogi) on its trains.
- Folded and packed: free. A scooter that is folded and packed can travel free as hand luggage, the railway said on 21 February 2025.
- Unpacked: PLN 6. From 24 February 2025 a scooter that isn’t packed has cost PLN 6.00 a journey, and the railway’s scooter page, updated on 24 February 2026, still gives PLN 6.00 for a single scooter ticket.
- A monthly scooter ticket: PLN 60. The same page gives PLN 60.00 for a monthly network ticket for a scooter, from 31 August 2025.
The monthly ticket’s conditions in force from 1 March 2026 cover a scooter or personal transport device (urządzenie transportu osobistego) on any Koleje Śląskie train:
- One scooter, unfolded and unpacked, while the ticket is valid; you still need a valid ticket for yourself, of any kind.
- A named ticket. Write your name on it, legibly and permanently, before the first journey: it is valid only with an identity document.
- Where to buy it: up to 14 days ahead at ticket offices, ticket machines and online or in apps that sell it, or on the day of travel from the train crew. It runs for one month from the day it is issued, or from a day you choose.
- Safety first. If carrying the scooter would threaten safety or order on board, the train crew can refuse to take you with it.
In February 2025 single scooter tickets were on sale in the railway’s Kaeśka app, its e-KŚ online shop, at ticket offices, from partner apps and sites, and from the train crew.
Did you know?
- Before the PLN 6 fare, an unfolded, unpacked scooter cost PLN 5.00 on Koleje Śląskie. The February 2025 change left the bike fare, electric bikes included, at PLN 8.40.
- Children’s scooters can ride along. ZTM’s rules allow a child’s small scooter on board, carried by the carer travelling with the child; roller skates, rollerblades and skateboards are allowed too.
- Poland modelled its under-16 helmet rule on the one for ski slopes, KRBRD said on 3 June 2026.
