E-scooters in Borås: Voi and Ryde, the centre’s parking areas and the rules
Two companies rent out e-scooters in Borås this year, Voi and Ryde, Borås Stad says; look up the fare in the app. Keep to the cycle path, or the road, and off pavements. In the city centre a ride can end only inside a marked e-scooter parking area, and in the busy places the city regulates a hire scooter goes no faster than 6 km/h.
E-scooters in Borås: Voi and Ryde
Borås Stad, the municipality, names two companies that rent out e-scooters (elsparkcyklar) in Borås in 2026: Voi and Ryde. Its e-scooter page, last changed on 3 September 2026, sends any further questions to the company concerned and gives both companies’ contacts (see the section on reporting below).
At 09:54 CET on Tuesday 3 November 2026 the map of Borås showed about 600 Voi scooters free to rent at that moment. The city also lists Ryde: open the Ryde app to find its scooters.
What does a hire scooter cost in Borås, and how old must you be?
Check the app: it gives the fare before you unlock, and the company’s own minimum age.
Swedish traffic law ties two of its rules to age. A rider under 15 must wear a helmet (Trafikförordningen, chapter 6, section 4 a), and from 15 you may, with special care, use the carriageway instead of the cycle path where the limit is 50 km/h or less (chapter 3, section 6). Transportstyrelsen, the Swedish Transport Agency, advises every e-scooter rider to wear a helmet (14 August 2026).

Where to park an e-scooter in Borås city centre
Borås Stad’s e-scooter page sets one rule for the city centre (innerstaden): where a marked e-scooter parking area exists, you must leave the scooter inside it. The city has 67 of these areas in Borås, set about 75 metres apart in the centre. Anywhere else in the centre you can’t end your ride, and the city’s parking map adds that you can’t end the payment either.
That map of e-scooter parking marks every area in the centre. The technical services department (Tekniska förvaltningen) keeps the areas on it up to date; the page itself is dated 4 October 2024. The point of the areas, the page says, is to keep pavements, cycle paths and roads clear of scooters lying or standing in the way of traffic and people on foot.
National law points the same way for every e-scooter, hired or private. Trafikförordningen, the Traffic Ordinance, as amended in 2022 (SFS 2022:905), bars parking an e-scooter on a footway or cycle path anywhere but a parking place (uppställningsplats) or a cycle rack (chapter 3, section 48). No vehicle may be parked with a wheel outside the markings of a parking place (section 49), or where it creates a danger or needlessly hinders traffic (section 47). Transportstyrelsen asks riders to think especially of older people, children and anyone with limited mobility or poor sight when they choose a spot.
In the districts outside the centre (stadsdelarna), the city’s rule is that a scooter must not be parked where it is a danger or an obstacle, and the national rule for footways and cycle paths holds there too. Should the municipality or the police have to move a scooter because it was a danger or an obstacle, Borås Stad warns that you, as the customer, may have to pay for the move.
In Borås city centre, end your ride only inside a marked e-scooter parking area. Elsewhere, keep the scooter off footways and cycle paths unless there is a parking place or a cycle rack, and out of everyone’s way.
Slow zones: 6 km/h where crowds gather
Where many people are on the move, Borås Stad limits the e-scooters that private companies rent out, so that everyone feels safe in town: inside its regulated areas a hire scooter can’t be ridden faster than 6 km/h.
The limit applies to rented scooters only; the city notes that it can’t restrict privately owned ones. Its page doesn’t say which places are regulated, so expect a hire scooter to slow down where crowds gather and, on any e-scooter, match your speed to the people, bends, surface and view around you, as Transportstyrelsen asks.
Two national rules matter on busy streets. On a pedestrian street (gågata) or in a walking-speed area (gångfartsområde), vehicles must keep to walking pace and may not be parked, and their drivers must give way to people on foot (Trafikförordningen, chapter 8, section 1). On footways and other paths meant for walking, people on foot have right of way too (chapter 3, section 58). Slow down and keep your distance when you pass anyone, Transportstyrelsen adds.
E-scooter rules in Sweden: what applies in Borås
Transportstyrelsen treats an e-scooter in traffic as a bicycle as long as it can’t go faster than 20 km/h and its motor’s continuous rated power is no more than 250 W (14 August 2026). Riding one, you follow the cyclists’ rules, and breaking them can cost you a fine. A faster or more powerful scooter may be used only in a fenced-off area, never in public traffic.
| Rule | What it means | Set by | Fixed fine for a rider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where to ride | Cycle path first. With special care, a rider of 15 or older may stay on the carriageway if its speed limit is no higher than 50 km/h. No riding on pavements or footways | Trafikförordningen, ch. 3, s. 6; Transportstyrelsen | SEK 500 for taking the carriageway without the right to |
| People on foot | They have right of way on footways and paths meant for walking; when you meet or overtake them, leave enough room and time for them to step aside | Trafikförordningen, ch. 3, s. 58 | SEK 500 |
| Pedestrian streets | On a gågata or in a gångfartsområde: no faster than walking pace, pedestrians first and no parking | Trafikförordningen, ch. 8, s. 1 | SEK 1,000 for exceeding walking pace or failing to give way |
| One rider | Nobody else aboard: the scooter is made for one | Trafikförordningen, ch. 6, s. 3; Transportstyrelsen | SEK 500, charged to the rider and to the passenger alike |
| Helmet | A must under 15; Transportstyrelsen urges all riders to wear one | Trafikförordningen, ch. 6, s. 4 a; Transportstyrelsen | – |
| Lights and kit | Brakes and a bell, or a similar signal; lights front and back and reflectors for riding in the dark | Transportstyrelsen | – |
| Alcohol and fatigue | Don’t ride tired or ill, or so affected by alcohol or drugs that you can’t ride safely | Trafikförordningen, ch. 3, s. 1; Transportstyrelsen | – |
| Slow areas | Rented scooters are held to 6 km/h in the busy places the city regulates | Borås Stad | – |
| Parking | In the centre, inside a marked e-scooter parking area; elsewhere, not on a footway or cycle path except in a parking place or rack, and never in the way | Borås Stad; Trafikförordningen, ch. 3, ss. 47 to 49 | – (you may pay for having it moved) |
The amounts in the last column are fixed fines (ordningsbot) from the catalogue that the Swedish Prosecution Authority (Åklagarmyndigheten) publishes, in its column for cyclists (Trafikförordningen, chapter 14, section 6), whose rules an e-scooter rider follows. The same national rules apply across Sweden: for Gothenburg, see our Gothenburg guide.
How to report a badly parked e-scooter in Borås
Borås Stad wants a hire scooter that blocks the way, or stands somewhere unsuitable, reported to its operator, preferably with a picture and where it is. It lists these contacts:
- Voi: support@voiapp.io or 08 525 197 27; Voi also has an online form for reporting one of its scooters.
- Ryde: support@ryde-technology.com or +46 77 588 80 12.
Other questions for the city go to its technical services department, at tekniska@boras.se or on 033-35 70 00.
E-scooters on Västtrafik buses, trams and trains
One rule covers e-scooters on every kind of Västtrafik vehicle, from buses and trams to trains and boats. Your own may travel fully folded, as hand luggage, when there is space for it; the same goes for a folding bike, a kick scooter or any other small one-person vehicle.
Put it where it won’t obstruct other passengers or the exits, soil the seats or fittings, or block the driver’s view. The scooter must carry an approved CE marking.
On a partner’s trains, such as SJ’s or Vy Tåg’s, other conditions may apply, so check with that company. With a hire scooter, finish the ride close to the stop first, inside a parking area if you are in the centre.
Riding your own e-scooter in Borås
A private e-scooter follows the same traffic rules as a hired one, but some duties fall on you as its owner and rider. The rider must make sure the scooter stays within the speed and power limits, Transportstyrelsen says, and for a child’s scooter that falls to the guardian. Many models on sale are faster or more powerful than the rules allow, the agency warns, and those may not go on public roads; some e-scooters also need traffic insurance.
Borås Stad can’t hold a private scooter to its 6 km/h limit, but the national parking rules bind it just as they bind a hired one.
