E-scooters in Växjö: Voi, parking in the right place and the rules of the road
Voi rents out e-scooters in Växjö; for the price, check its app. Ride as a cyclist would, on cycle paths or the roadway, never on the pavement. Leave the scooter in one of the specially designated places or in one of the town’s cycle stands, because on municipal land the parking attendants take away badly parked ones once someone reports them.
E-scooters in Växjö: Voi
The map of Växjö showed about 490 Voi scooters free to rent at that moment, at 11:04 CET on Tuesday 3 November 2026. Växjö kommun, the municipality, also lists Ryde, with an address for fault reports; for Ryde scooters, see Ryde’s own app.
How many companies are renting out e-scooters (elsparkcyklar) at any one time varies, the municipality notes on its e-scooter page, last updated on 20 May 2026. Since the hiring takes place in public places (offentlig plats), the companies must hold a permit from the police, which the police can choose to withdraw from a company that doesn’t keep to the conditions in place. Those duties fall on the companies, not on riders. The municipality also talks with the companies regularly about how they run the service, parking included.
What does a hire scooter cost in Växjö, and how old must you be?
Check the app for the price and for any minimum age the company sets.
Swedish traffic law has two age rules worth knowing. A helmet is required below the age of 15 (Trafikförordningen, the Traffic Ordinance, chapter 6, section 4 a). And once you are 15, you are allowed to leave the cycle path for the carriageway, with special care, on a road limited to 50 km/h or less (chapter 3, section 6). Both the municipality and Transportstyrelsen, the Swedish Transport Agency, advise a helmet at any age.
Every rider is bound to know the traffic rules, the municipality points out, and if you hire, it is worth reading the company’s terms as well. First ride on a shared scooter? Start with how to rent an e-scooter.
Where to ride an e-scooter in Växjö
On an e-scooter in Växjö you ride under the rules for bicycles: the municipality asks riders to keep to them and to ride only on the cycle path or the carriageway. Pavements and footways are off limits, a point both the municipality and Transportstyrelsen make. The Traffic Ordinance puts bicycles on the cycle path wherever there is one (chapter 3, section 6), and a way meant for other traffic, a footway for instance, may only be crossed.
The municipality’s page for cyclists (updated 22 July 2024) explains two layouts you will meet on Växjö’s streets:
- Cycle boxes (cykelbox): a space of their own for cyclists before a junction, in front of the stop line for motor vehicles, meant to prevent crashes with turning vehicles.
- Roundabouts: most in Växjö are built for cyclists to ride round inside them. Some cyclists don’t feel safe there and ride over the pedestrian crossing instead, so a few have been rebuilt to give both options, and the municipality plans to rebuild others so that cyclists are led past only by cycle crossings beside the roundabout.
Cycle crossings have rules of their own (chapter 6, section 6): before riding out onto a cykelpassage, slow down, watch for vehicles approaching it and cross only if it is safe; at a cykelöverfart, take account of how far off approaching vehicles are and how fast they are going.
People on foot come first on footways, on paths meant for walking and when you ride out of a property’s exit onto the road (chapter 3, section 58). Whenever you meet or overtake someone walking, leave them enough room and time to step aside. Within a gågata (pedestrian street) or a gångfartsområde (walking-speed area), every vehicle is held to walking pace and must give way to pedestrians, and none may be parked (chapter 8, section 1).
The municipality adds a practical warning: an e-scooter’s wheels are small and kerbs can be tall next to them, so watch the surface ahead. Ease off and leave space when you pass other people, it says, and ride alone, because the scooter is built for one person.
Where to park an e-scooter in Växjö
Växjö kommun wants an e-scooter parked, first of all, in one of the specially designated places (särskilt utpekade platser). Any of the town’s ordinary cycle stands will also do, and the municipality’s list of tips for riders names a cycle stand as the preferred spot, out of other people’s way. Its e-scooter page also links to a map of the cycle parking in the city centre.
Wherever you leave it, the scooter must not block the footway or put other road users at risk. The municipality asks riders to think in particular of older people, children, people with limited mobility and people with poor sight. It also reminds riders that since 1 September 2022 an e-scooter may not be parked on footways and cycle paths.
Trafikförordningen sets the national rule in chapter 3, section 48, in its 2022 wording (SFS 2022:905): the only spots on a footway or cycle path where an e-scooter may be parked are an uppställningsplats (a parking place) and equipment meant for parking cycles. Section 47 bars stopping or parking any vehicle in a spot or a manner that creates danger, or that hinders or disrupts traffic without need, and section 49 bars parking with any wheel standing outside a parking place or the markings that show where parking is allowed. These rules bind the rider, on a hired scooter or a private one.
In Växjö, a designated place or a cycle stand is the spot to end your ride. Don’t leave the scooter on a footway or cycle path outside a parking place or stand, or anywhere it would be in the way.
Badly parked scooters: removal and reporting in Växjö
Växjö kommun has the right to move an e-scooter that someone has left on a footway, and one that puts other road users in danger. On municipal land, its parking attendants (parkeringsvakter) take in any badly parked e-scooter once a report has reached the municipality.
On private land the property owner deals with it, either by contacting the company or by carefully putting the scooter out on municipal land. And if you find one lying in your path, the municipality says you may stand it upright, but you may not move it somewhere else.
The company that owns the scooter should hear about it first, the municipality says, because that is the quickest way for it to learn of the problem. The contacts it gives:
- Voi: Voi’s own online fault-report page, which the municipality links to.
- Ryde: email support@ryde-technology.com.
- Växjö kommun: for a scooter standing in an unsuitable place on municipal land, call 0470-410 00. The municipality’s contact centre (kontaktcenter) is open on weekdays other than public holidays, 07:30 to 16:30.
E-scooter rules in Sweden: what applies in Växjö
In Swedish traffic an e-scooter is treated as a cycle, Transportstyrelsen says, if its top speed is no more than 20 km/h and the motor’s nominal output, the power it can keep up over time, is 250 W at most (page updated 14 August 2026). Within those limits it may use any road or path open to cycling, following the cyclists’ rules; a scooter over either limit may be ridden only inside an enclosed area that the public can’t get into.
| Rule | What it means | Set by | Fixed fine for a rider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where to ride | On the cycle path if there is one; from 15, on a carriageway with a limit of 50 km/h or less, with special care. Not on pavements or footways | Trafikförordningen, ch. 3, s. 6; Transportstyrelsen; Växjö kommun | SEK 500 for riding on a carriageway you may not use |
| Traffic lights | Obey red signals, which bind every road user | Trafikförordningen, ch. 2, s. 2 | SEK 1,500 |
| People on foot | Yield to them on footways and paths for walking and when leaving a property for the road; leave them room and time when meeting or overtaking them | Trafikförordningen, ch. 3, s. 58 | SEK 500 |
| Walking-pace streets | In a gågata or gångfartsområde: walking pace only, give way to pedestrians, no parking | Trafikförordningen, ch. 8, s. 1 | SEK 1,000 (too fast, or not giving way) |
| One person | No passenger: an e-scooter is made for one rider | Trafikförordningen, ch. 6, s. 3; Transportstyrelsen | SEK 500 each, for the rider and for the passenger |
| Helmet | Required under 15 and advised for everyone | Trafikförordningen, ch. 6, s. 4 a; Transportstyrelsen | – |
| Equipment | A bell or other sound signal, and brakes; for riding in the dark, lights at both ends and reflectors | Transportstyrelsen | – |
| Fit to ride | Not when overtired or ill, nor when alcohol or another drug keeps you from riding safely | Trafikförordningen, ch. 3, s. 1; Transportstyrelsen | – |
| Parking | Best in a designated place or a cycle stand; on footways and cycle paths, only at a parking place or a stand; never in the way | Växjö kommun; Trafikförordningen, ch. 3, ss. 47 to 49 | – (the municipality may remove it) |
The amounts are fixed fines (ordningsböter) from annex 1A (SFS 2025:917), which Åklagarmyndigheten, the Swedish Prosecution Authority, publishes; they are those in the column under Trafikförordningen, chapter 14, section 6, which fines drivers of non-motor vehicles, cyclists and so e-scooter riders among them. Sweden’s traffic rules are national; for a town that adds marked parking areas and slow zones of its own, see the Borås guide.
Riding your own e-scooter in Växjö
Most of the rules above apply to a private e-scooter just as they do to a hired one, including the ban on parking on footways and cycle paths and the municipality’s right to move a scooter left on a footway or putting others at risk. Transportstyrelsen makes whoever is riding answerable for the scooter meeting the technical requirements, and a parent or guardian answerable for a minor’s.
Before buying, check the top speed and the motor’s rating: many e-scooters on the market fall outside the bicycle class and so are barred from public traffic, the agency notes, and some need traffic insurance (trafikförsäkring).
