E-scooters in Eskilstuna: Qick, the agreed zones, Smedjegatan and where to park
In Eskilstuna you can rent a Qick e-scooter; the app shows the price and Qick’s age limit. Under Swedish rules an e-scooter limited to 20 km/h and 250 W counts as a bicycle: use the cycle path where there is one, keep off the pavement, and on a footway or cycle path park only in a parking bay or a cycle stand. In letters of intent with Eskilstuna kommun, the companies have agreed to stop rides ending in some zones, to slow scooters to 5–6 km/h in some places and to remove a reported badly parked scooter within two hours, the municipality’s page says.
Which e-scooter companies operate in Eskilstuna?
At 09:54 CET on Tuesday 3 November 2026, the map of Eskilstuna showed about 580 Qick scooters free to rent at that moment.
Eskilstuna kommun, the municipality, says several companies rent out e-scooters in the town, and it tells riders to take questions and complaints about the scooters to those companies. Its e-scooter page (updated 29 September 2026) gives contacts for two: Qick, at support@qickscooters.com, and Ryde, through the contact form on Ryde’s website. For Ryde’s scooters, check its own app.
The scooters are not a service the municipality has bought. It has signed letters of intent (avsiktsförklaringar) with the companies that came to it wanting to operate, so that the business runs on shared ground rules.
To put their scooters out, the companies must apply to the police for a permit, the page says; the municipality is a consultee (remissinstans) and may set conditions in its opinion to the police. Enforcing the traffic rules falls to the police, not to the municipality.
How much does it cost to rent an e-scooter in Eskilstuna?
Check the app for the price before you unlock.
Check the app for Qick’s minimum age too: Transportstyrelsen’s rules for e-scooters give none.
Beside the traffic rules, it helps to know the company’s own rules and conditions, the municipality notes. First time on a shared scooter? Read how to rent an e-scooter.
What the companies agreed with Eskilstuna: no-parking zones, slow zones and removals
On top of Swedish law come the commitments the rental companies made in their letters of intent with the municipality. Among other things, the letters cover zones where e-scooters may not be parked, speed limits, requirements for putting scooters out and how badly parked ones are handled, its page says. The page doesn’t list the places concerned: each company’s app shows them.
| Commitment | What it means for you | Who it binds |
|---|---|---|
| No-parking zones | In some places a hire scooter can’t be returned; the app shows where | Agreed by the municipality and the companies; a company may restrict parking further |
| Slow zones | In some places the scooter is limited to 5–6 km/h; the app shows where | The companies with a letter of intent |
| Badly parked scooters | A scooter reported to its company is to be removed within two hours of the report | The companies with a letter of intent |
Swedish e-scooter law in Eskilstuna: riding, lights and fines
Transportstyrelsen, the Swedish Transport Agency, counts an e-scooter as a bicycle in traffic provided it can’t exceed 20 km/h, with a motor whose continuous rated power stays within 250 W, a rule the municipality’s page repeats. Such a scooter may be ridden wherever cycling is allowed, under the cyclists’ traffic rules, and it carries one person only (agency page updated 14 August 2026).
| Rule | What applies | Source of the rule | Fixed fine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cycle path or road | Use the cycle path (cykelbana) where there is one. With special care you may take the carriageway instead if you are 15 or over and the speed limit there is at most 50 km/h, or where it better suits where you are going | Trafikförordningen, ch. 3 § 6 | SEK 500 for using the carriageway when you should be on the cycle path |
| Pavements and footways | No riding there | Transportstyrelsen | – |
| Red lights | Stop at a red signal, as any cyclist must | Trafikförordningen, ch. 2 § 2 | SEK 1,500 |
| Passengers | None: an e-scooter carries one person | Trafikförordningen, ch. 6 § 3 | SEK 500 each, for rider and passenger |
| Pedestrian streets and walking-pace areas | Walking pace at most; pedestrians have priority; no parking | Trafikförordningen, ch. 8 § 1 | SEK 1,000 for going faster than walking pace, or for not giving way |
| Brakes, bell and lights | Brakes and a bell, plus front and rear lights and reflectors after dark | Transportstyrelsen | – |
| Helmet | Required for riders under 15; the agency advises one for everyone | Transportstyrelsen | – |
| Drink, drugs and tiredness | Don’t ride if alcohol or another substance stops you riding safely, nor when you are too tired or ill | Transportstyrelsen | – |
These are fixed fines (ordningsbot). The amounts are those that annex 1A to the Swedish Prosecution Authority’s catalogue lists for drivers of vehicles that are not motor vehicles, such as cyclists.
Parking an e-scooter in Eskilstuna
Since an amendment of 2022 (SFS 2022:905), Trafikförordningen lets an e-scooter stand on a footway or a cycle path only in a parking bay or in a device for parking cycles, such as a stand (ch. 3 § 48). Like any vehicle, it may never be left where it causes danger or needlessly blocks or disturbs traffic (ch. 3 § 47).
The municipality’s page asks the same of riders: never leave a scooter blocking the footway or where it puts anyone at risk, whether people walking, cyclists, buses or car traffic. Someone with poor sight can be badly hurt by a scooter standing in the middle of the pavement, it warns.
The municipality’s cycle map (cykelkarta) shows cycle parking across the municipality. There are covered stands at a number of bus stops, mostly further from the centre, such as on Hedevägen in Slagsta and Melinsvägen in Husbybyn, but most of the town’s many other cycle stands are run by property owners, not the municipality (page updated 5 March 2024).
To report a hire scooter left in the way, go first to the company it belongs to, the municipality asks, since that way the company hears of it soonest. Its contact details should be on the scooter and on its website.
In Eskilstuna, finish in a rack or a cycle parking area, outside the zones the app marks, and never across the pavement.
Riding in Eskilstuna: cycle paths, Smedjegatan and the slow zones
Keep to the cycle path first and follow the traffic rules for cyclists, as on an ordinary bicycle, the municipality says. Signs on the spot must always be followed, and in the slow zones agreed with the companies the scooter itself won’t go faster than 5–6 km/h.
Smedjegatan, in the town centre, has been a cycle street (cykelgata) since May 2024, the municipality says. It plans to make Bruksgatan one later, and has no decision to add more (page updated 3 August 2026). On a cycle street:
- The limit is 30 km/h for every vehicle, and anyone driving a motor vehicle has to keep to the pace of the cycle traffic.
- A driver turning in from another road gives way to vehicles already on the cycle street, your scooter included.
- When you leave it for another road, you give way to every vehicle whose path crosses yours.
- Vehicles may be parked only in places specially laid out for parking.
Signs mark where a cycle street begins and ends. Trafikförordningen sets the speed and parking rules and the duty to give way on entering in ch. 8 § 1 a, and the duty to give way on leaving in ch. 3 § 21.
Riding in winter? The cycle map also shows the cycle routes the municipality clears of snow first.
E-scooters on Sörmlandstrafiken buses, Mälartåg trains and the MDU bus
On Sörmlandstrafiken’s buses, an e-scooter, a folding bicycle or other special luggage travels free if there is room. Fold it and keep it by your seat or in the place set aside for it. Scooters that can’t be folded stay off the bus, as do bulky items.
Mälartåg’s regional trains stop in Eskilstuna on two lines, Örebro–Eskilstuna–Stockholm–Uppsala and Linköping–Katrineholm–Eskilstuna–Västerås–Sala–Uppsala, its line map shows. A folded e-scooter can travel with you: Mälartåg wants it on the floor next to your seat or in the baggage rack (bagagestället), and off the hat shelf above the seats.
Students at Mälardalen University ride its MDU bus free between Campus Eskilstuna, which it leaves from Rademachergatan 26, and Campus Västerås, on weekdays in term time, with their MDU card as the ticket. E-scooters and e-bikes may not come on board, for safety reasons, though an ordinary folding bicycle may. For the rules at the other end, see the Västerås guide.
Örebro and the Eskilstuna map
Örebro, at the western end of Mälartåg’s line from Uppsala through Eskilstuna, has its own scooter rules: see the Örebro guide. For the scooters parked around you right now, open the Eskilstuna map.
